The world won, it seems.

In a weekend where The Expendables won the box office by attracting all the young dudes, and Eat Pray Love attracted all the ladies, Scott Pilgrim came in only fifth at the weekend box office, bringing in $10.5M in ticket sales.

Not a solid opening, despite decent reviews.

On the plus side, The Other Guys held on to the number 3 spot, making $18M in its second weekend. Should be good enough for a $100M domestic gross.

Michael Cera, Jason Schwartzman and Matt Zaller are talking about… nothing much in particular.

Suddenly Zach Galifianakis does a drunken Judy Garland. For no good reason.

Then he’s autotuned. For no good reason.

He’s not even in Scott Pilgrim.

See for yourself…

Jackass 3D Trailer

Aug 9,2010

I think we can all agree that 3D movies are just a BS gimmick and a fad. And that goes for 3D television as well. 3D everything. I mean, they’ve tried this before, right? In the 50s? Does no one remember their history? Sure, when they do it well, (Avatar) it’s a nice little curiosity. But when they do it poorly (every other 3D movie) it’s just a waste of time, it hurts your eyes and your brain and it can’t hide the shitty movie behind the 3D gimmickry.

However, some things are already, cheap, tawdry and gimmicky. In the right way. In other words, Jackass was made for 3D. And 3D was made for Jackass.

Looks like all that promotion paid off last week. The Other Guys did a stronger than anticipated $35.6 million in box office over the weekend.

Everything I read is saying this is a big win for Ferrell. It’s his second biggest opening ever, behind the $47 million 2006 opening for Telledega Nights.

And this is his first “hit” since Land of the Lost, so he needed a strong opening, according to people who measure those sort of things.

You know that Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are the other guys in The Other Guys. But did you know that Rob Riggle and Daymon Wayans Jr. are the OTHER other guys in The Other Guys?

I’m sorry. I can’t resist. Damon Wayans Jr… The other, other, OTHER, other Wayans?

In the studio to promote The Other Guys, Will Ferrell discusses drinking your liquids slowly, being the United Way of comedy and the dubious talent of Rob Riggle.

The glasses say he parties, but the bracelets say he cares.

Adam McKay might be the biggest contemporary comedy legend who you wouldn’t know by sight.

Consider these credentials:

  • Former head writer for SNL (Will Farrell era)
  • Co-writer of Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers.
  • Co-founder of Funny or Die.
  • Co-producer of Eastbound & Down.

Adam was on Fallon to discuss The Other Guys, which he directed. But he also mentions Pearl the Landlord, and the forgotten genius of Micheal Keaton.

Dinner For Schmucks

Dinner For Schmucks

Last weekend at the box office, the big comedy was the Steve Carell, Paul Rudd (directed by Austin Powers and Meet the Fockers director Jay Roach) vehicle Dinner For Schmucks.

Schmucks brought in $23.3 million dollars over the weekend, enough for a 2nd place box office finish behind Inception.

The general assessment of the Schmucks performance is okayish. Critics were only lukewarm on the movie, and while this opening points to the movie making money, Schmucks is not expected to do Hangover-type numbers over time.

BoxOfficeMojo suggests that the film might do Funny People-type business:

Dinner for Schmucks served up an estimated $23.3 million on approximately 3,400 screens at 2,911 locations, which was about the same amount as Funny People made on the same weekend last year. The opening was also a step up from I Love You, Man, Role Models and Get Him to the Greek, and it marked a personal best for Paul Rudd in a lead role, though Steve Carell has seen bigger starts.
