Congratulations, SNL! You took a topical news event and made a funny out of it! Good for you!
No… it’s not “a bunch of couples” sitting around at lunch and Brett Favre keeps texting them naughty pictures. Over. And Over. And Over. And. Over. That’s that lazy way you WANTED to do it. Instead, you noticed there was a ubiquitous advertising campaign that would lend itself to a joke. And you used it. In just the right amount. Didn’t beat it to death. That’s how you do it! Great!
Now, learn from this exercise.

I enjoy sketches where people kick Andy Samberg in the crotch. In fact, every sketch should just be various scenarios that lead to Andy Samberg getting kicked in the crotch. Please. For the children. Also, it’s the only way to make him funny.

But she IS a Sarah Palin clone. Down to the hair and everything. I don’t think she or anyone can deny that. If Sarah Palin hadn’t happened, she couldn’t have run for dog catcher. But that sort of is the point, isn’t it?

This is a good sketch in the sense that it’s accurate, topical, and if someone actually came up with a way to do this, they’d make a mint.
However, the accuracy falls down midway through because no one’s mom uses a MacBook Pro, or even a laptop for that matter. Would have been funnier to see Jane Lynch typing on some grey old Packard-Bell box.

Once again, Jay Pharoah gets to show off one of his uncanny impressions. I’m thankful that so far he’s gotten one sketch a show to show us what he can do. At least Lorne hasn’t buried him for six weeks or made him fight it out Beyond the Thunderdome style just to cut his teeth. But hopefully we’ll get a chance to see if he can be funny beyond the impressions.

As you know, I’m a fan of Bryan Cranston. Given a chance, he can be smart and funny. Not so much on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, but then, we know what he has to work with. This was his best sketch, tho.

Cathy showed up on weekend update to discuss her final appearance in the sunday funny papers.
How’d it turn out? She’s pregnant. With a baby girl. Sweet.

I’m a realist, so I don’t have any high hopes that SNL will actually be funny this year. But I do have high hopes for new castmemeber Jay Pharoah. Assuming he can get a few of his sketches on the air, I think he’s got some serious talent to display.

Yes… only because of Katy Perry’s cleavage. (more…)

Here’s what I’m not going to do. I’m not going to make any reading-off-a-teleprompter jokes.
I’m just gonna stick to, why-are-you-so-mean-to-that-nice-Peggy-Olsen, Fred Armisen jokes.

I’ll have videos from all the talk shows this week starting tomorrow.
In the meantime, here’s some weekend funny news. Saturday Night Live just announced four new cast members for the upcoming season. The new cast will feature Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain and Taran Killam (Will Forte and Jenny Slate are leaving the cast, FYI).
But the biggest news on the net is the addition of comedian Jay Pharoah. Pharoah is known for his impressions, including a killer Barack Obama impression that should see him taking those duties over from Fred Armisen.
After the jump, catch some video of Pharoah’s Obama stuff… and also some Denzel Washington and Will Smith impressions that are fantastic…
The NYTimes’ ArtsBeat is announcing today that Will Forte will be leaving Saturday Night Live before the new season even begins.
The usual happy-all-around press release went out. Quoth Lorne Michaels:
“After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from ‘S.N.L.’ to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years.”
This is a bit puzzling to me. Was MacGruber a big hit earlier this year and I simply don’t remember it? Actually, it turns out just the opposite. MacGruber has the distinction of being one of the biggest SNL movie bombs of all time.
This will sound snarky, but I mean this: good luck on those “new opportunities,” Will…
Classic Forte SNL sketch after the jump…
